The site is the instrument

How thinkinglabs became a markdown-canonical public working surface for writing, calibration, agents, and accountable change.

Overview

Most personal sites begin with a question of presentation. What should the homepage say? Which work should be featured? How should the archive be arranged so a stranger understands the shape of a life in a few polite clicks?

thinkinglabs began somewhere else. The first question was not what the site should look like, but where truth should live.

That sounds severe for a small website. It is also the only question that made the rest of the design feel inevitable. If the web page is the source of truth, then everything important hides inside a renderer, a CMS, a dashboard, or a hosted database. If the database is the source of truth, then the history becomes hard to read, hard to review, and easy to quietly corrupt. If the notes app is the source of truth, then the public version is a performance after the fact.

The answer here is deliberately plain: the source is a git repository full of markdown files. The website, the JSON feeds, the SQLite index, the MCP server, the Open Graph images, and the agent-readable llms.txt file are all projections from that source. They can be rebuilt. They can be wrong. They can be thrown away and regenerated. The markdown is the durable object.

That one constraint gave the project its character. thinkinglabs is not quite a blog, not quite a portfolio, and not quite a knowledge base. It is closer to a public workbench: a place where claims can be made precise, predictions can be scored, decisions can be reversed, questions can remain open, and agents can read the same structure a human sees without scraping the furniture.

A site for being wrong carefully

The phrase that kept returning during the build was "being wrong in public." Not as a gesture of theatrical humility, and not as a personal brand. More like an engineering requirement.

A private belief can drift for years without ever encountering the world. A public prediction eventually has to resolve. A public claim can be contradicted. A public decision can be superseded by a better one. Once the system has a place for those reversals, the point of publishing changes. The goal is no longer to look consistently finished. The goal is to leave enough structure behind that later inspection is possible.

That is why the repository has separate kinds instead of one undifferentiated stream of posts. A thought is allowed to be rough. A claim is not. A prediction needs a due date and a confidence value. A decision needs context, status, and possible reversal. A question needs enough shape that someone else, or someone else's agent, can decide whether an answer is useful. An input records the outside material that changed the work.

The distinction matters because each object has a different failure mode. A thought fails when it becomes too expensive to write. A claim fails when it becomes too vague to test. A prediction fails when it never has to meet a date. A decision fails when nobody can reconstruct why it made sense at the time. A site that wants to support all of those objects has to make room for their different kinds of accountability.

This is the quiet ambition of thinkinglabs: not to publish more, but to make the cost of returning to an old belief lower than the cost of forgetting it.

Markdown as the durable object

The architecture records are blunt about the storage decision. content/<kind>/*.md is canonical and sacred. Everything else is derived.

That choice is not nostalgia for simple tools. It is a bet on auditability. Markdown in git has properties that are still annoyingly hard to beat: it can be searched with rg, edited in any plain text editor, reviewed in a pull request, bisected through history, copied without an export flow, and understood without a running application. The format does not know anything about the site. That is exactly why it can outlive the site.

Each file carries YAML frontmatter validated by a per-kind Zod schema. The body stays prose. This is the compromise the system keeps making: structure where structure earns its keep, freedom where premature structure would make authoring brittle. A claim needs a confidence number. A post needs a title and dates. A thought mostly needs enough metadata to be found again.

The derived SQLite index exists because agents and local tools need fast queries: full-text search, tags, typed links, and eventually semantic lookup. But the index is intentionally disposable. It is rebuilt into dist/index.sqlite; it is not the place where knowledge lives. A bug in an indexer can produce a bad view. It cannot corrupt the source.

That boundary is the whole design in miniature. Let machines build useful surfaces. Do not let the useful surface become the source.

Agents should read better than they write

The project also exists because the audience for a website has changed. Some readers are still people with browsers. Some are language models, scripts, crawlers, and assistants trying to answer a narrower question than "what is on this page?"

HTML is a fine surface for humans. It is a poor contract for agents. An agent should not have to infer that a large heading is a claim title, that a muted label is a confidence score, or that a card in a gallery corresponds to a content kind. It should not need to scrape a visual layout at all if the same repository can produce a structured surface.

That is why thinkinglabs ships a small set of machine-readable entry points alongside the pages. llms.txt lists the public surfaces. /api/<kind>.json exposes collection data. The personal MCP server gives agents stable resource URIs such as thinkinglabs://claims, thinkinglabs://predictions/calibration, and thinkinglabs://posts/{slug}, and the remote endpoint exists so an external agent can connect without cloning the repository first.

The important part is not the protocol fashion of the week. It is the direction of dependency. The machine surfaces are not a second product bolted onto the side of the website. They are sibling projections from the same markdown source. When the source changes, the pages and the agent views change together.

That makes the site feel less like a publication and more like an operating surface. Humans get typography, whitespace, and a calm path through the material. Agents get stable names, typed objects, and JSON. Both are reading the same work.

The write gate

The project is full of agents, but it is not built on the fantasy that agents should quietly mutate the public record.

Five background agents can scan the corpus: one notices dormant projects, one reviews decisions, one tries to resolve predictions, one flags stale post sections, and one triages submitted answers to questions. Their job is to propose. They enqueue typed proposals into .proposal-queue.json. They do not write to content/.

That is not a lack of ambition. It is the ambition.

The repo is a knowledge system, and a knowledge system is not improved by making corruption cheaper. The useful agentic pattern here is not "let the model do everything." It is "let the model notice more than I would notice unaided, then make the human confirmation step cheap enough that it actually happens."

The review flow is intentionally ordinary: proposals appear, a human accepts, edits, rejects, defers, or merges, and only then does a handler patch the markdown. Rejections are remembered so the same suggestion does not return forever. Accepted AI-assisted effects can be recorded as provenance. The mechanism is small, but it encodes a larger preference: unattended agents should widen attention, not seize authority.

This is also why the build pipeline matters. A content edit is not done because a file was saved. It is done when the schemas pass, the site builds, the feeds regenerate, the structured data checks out, the index rebuilds, and the tests still tell the same story. The local commands are part of the editorial process, not a separate engineering ritual.

The shape arrived in layers

The shape did not arrive as a single revelation, and it would be false to describe it as though the design were waiting intact behind the curtain. It arrived in layers: first as a storage decision, then as a set of object kinds, then as a public surface that could be read by people without losing its usefulness to machines, and finally as a calmer visual language that stopped trying to explain the system and began to let the system be felt.

What made the work feel quick, in retrospect, was not speed so much as accumulated constraint. Once markdown had become the durable source, once each kind of object had been given its own burden of evidence, once agents were allowed to notice without being allowed to silently rewrite, the remaining choices were no longer open in the vague and exhausting way early choices are open; they were narrower, more demanding, and easier to respect.

There is a lesson in that sequence that I want to remember, because software often looks mysterious when the visible thing appears near the end, even though the visible thing is usually only the residue of decisions that have become precise enough to execute. The homepage is just the last surface to admit what the system already believes.

The current visual language follows that belief. The landing page is a quiet gallery of object kinds rather than a hero section explaining the site to itself. The about page calls it a public working surface. The agents page describes the structured doors. The privacy page says, plainly, that the static site is not trying to observe its readers. Even the design system insists on restraint: fewer panels, more whitespace, less dashboard, more artifact.

That restraint is not decoration. It is a way of keeping the metadata from becoming louder than the work.

What this first post is for

This post is the first real post in content/posts/, which makes it both a beginning and a test object.

It tests the post schema. It tests section freshness stamps. It gives the posts listing something true to count. It gives the build pipeline a real essay instead of a fixture. It gives the site a small origin story that can be linked, queried, indexed, and revisited when the architecture no longer feels obvious.

More importantly, it records the reason this place exists before the place starts accumulating reasons of its own.

thinkinglabs is a bet that a personal site can be more than a shelf for finished thoughts. It can be an instrument: something that makes a certain kind of work easier to do honestly. It can ask for confidence when I make a prediction, evidence when I make a claim, context when I make a decision, and a date when I say a section is still fresh. It can let agents help without letting them silently rewrite the record. It can make the public version close enough to the working version that publishing stops feeling like a second job.

That is the hope, at least. The better test will come later, when some confident claim here turns out to be wrong, when a prediction resolves badly, when a decision reverses, when a section goes stale, or when an agent proposes a change I would have missed. The site will be doing its job if those moments feel less like embarrassment and more like maintenance.

The first post, then, is not a ribbon cutting. It is a note taped to the bench: this is what the instrument was built to measure.
