Agentic commerce is evidence that OpenAI is willing to make ChatGPT into an operational layer between users and outside institutions, not merely a recommendation engine. Merchants expose structured data and transaction flows; the assistant mediates discovery and purchasing intent.

This matters for the social-infrastructure thesis because commerce is one of the places where identity, trust, permissions, representation, and delegation have to become explicit. A system that lets people, agents, and businesses transact together already needs some of the same connective tissue as a broader human-agent network.
